Food waste recycling

Food waste recycling collection service

Food waste recyclingCae Post offers a food waste recycling service for businesses in Powys and North Shropshire.

Whether you run a hotel or a restaurant, a cafe or a takeaway, a school or a college, a care home or a hospital – in fact any organisation that prepares and serves food – it is almost inevitable that you will have some food waste.

Most food waste ends up in landfill, where it rots and produces methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. However, recycled food waste can be transformed into fuel or good quality fertiliser.

Cae Post collects all types of kitchen food waste including fruit and vegetables, meat and bones and dairy products – in fact all food leftovers from your kitchen.

We will provide you with a suitable container (or containers) for you to store your food waste and we will arrange regular collections from your premises.

What happens to the waste we collect?

The food waste we collect is processed locally via ‘In Vessel Composting’. This process breaks down the waste using micro-organisms that release nutrients which in turn raise the temperature to between 60 and 70 degrees Celsius. The temperature rise is necessary to kill any pathogens and seeds, to enable the final product to meet regulations required for the processing of animal by-product material. The final product is a nutrient rich fertilizer used mainly in agriculture.

Some food facts

According to WRAP, food waste accounts for over 40% of all waste going to landfill from the hospitality sector. Every year more than 500,000 tonnes of food are wasted in restaurants, pubs, hotels and takeaways in the UK – that’s the equivalent of almost 1 billion average plates of food.

The benefits for your business

By recycling your food waste, not only are you doing your bit for the environment, but you could save your business money, as the cost of recycling may be less than the cost of sending the waste to landfill. Many organisations also report that, when they start separating out their food waste, they reduce the amount of food waste they generate, as it is a stark reminder of how much is being thrown away. Recycling your food waste could also become a marketing opportunity for your business, as customers increasingly seek out businesses that offer a more sustainable approach.
